Coaching in Oxfordshire

My coaching is effective whether delivered face to face or remotely.

I coach in person based at The Practice Rooms in Summertown, Oxford, where I have a regular presence on Wednesdays. There is opportunity to use this space on other days subject to availability. The Practice Rooms provides a venue for a wide variety of coaching, counselling and therapies of all sorts.

I can always come to your home or premises, or ad hoc space can be found, for face-to-face coaching.

The obvious alternative to meeting in person is to meet on line – using Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or Skype. It has advantages in terms, for example, of increased flexibility and, the saving of travel time and cost. And we are still able to see each other, although in a more limited way than meeting in person. There is also somewhat less scope for experiments involving movement or activity of any sort – although it is surprising how much can actually be achieved in that way.

The other mode of meeting is by phone (including for example WhatsApp or online audio mode). People are surprised by how effective this can be and often is. It is very much a function of one’s ‘wiring’, but for some the narrowing of the ‘channel’ to voice only and removing the distraction (and exposure) of video channel can significantly enhance the interaction.

What happens in my coaching

The word ‘coaching’ means many things to many people. In some contexts it is taken to mean teaching of or training in a specific technical skill of some sort, for example, sport, writing CVs or making public presentations.

While my work is intended to have real world impact, my coaching focus is on the person, not the problem. Time and again I find that when we pull away from dwelling on the cognitive thinking and the external, and bring focus onto feelings and internal experience, shifts occur. We can think about situations and other people to our hearts’ content, but if we have come for coaching with respect to these, by definition we are stuck. We can’t change something or someone who is not here.

It is only by changing ourselves – our own feelings about and responses to what is external – that we can change a dynamic, become un-stuck and get a different result. My role as coach is to help you unravel and alter feelings and responses and support you in progressing where before you were not (which may include getting specific training in technical skills!).
